It has been 30 anniversary since the original Toy Story film was released, launching the animation giant as a major animation studio and introducing audiences to iconic characters like the cowboy doll (Tom Hanks) and the space ranger (Tim Allen), who are now household names.
Coming in 2026, the fifth installment is scheduled for release. The initial preview for Toy Story 5 appeared this week, providing a glimpse into the plot but keeping fans curious how it will address the ending of Toy Story 4.
In the teaser shows the young girl — who received the toy collection when he left for college — receiving a brand new plaything, one that alarms Woody, Buzz, and the crew. Bonnie gets her first tablet computer, and she is excited about it.
Theoretically, the amphibian-inspired device will animate just like the rest of her playthings. However, the characters appear to consider it as a danger intending to supplant them, which it probably is.
One thing the teaser doesn't touch on is why the sheriff is back with his friends in Bonnie's room. The finale of Toy Story 4 saw him embark on a new adventure with the shepherdess (Annie Potts), traveling with a fair and helping prize toys locate loving owners.
Certainly, the filmmakers will explain the aftermath of Toy Story 4 in the movie. Witnessing him appear in Bonnie's room without warning is a little strange, however. It also raises questions whether his partner will have come back with him. And what about the stuntman toy (the star)?
Fortunately, some elements are continuing from the prior film. The last thing the cowboy did before setting off for his new life was pass his symbol of authority to Jessie (Joan Cusack), leaving her as the leader of Bonnie's bedroom. The clip shows the insignia pinned to her shirt.
Hopefully she is remains the driving force among the group.
Toy Story 5 arrives in theaters on the scheduled date.
