A recent study reveals that people who come off popular GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt conventional lifestyle plans.
Published data in a leading health publication shows that while overweight individuals can lose about a fifth of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"People purchasing such drugs should be aware of the potential of quick rebound weight gain when the treatment is stopped," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery means a return to starting weight in about 18 months.
Comparing Treatments
The analysis, which examined 37 of trials involving thousands of participants, contrasted the results of these new drugs with other pills.
Scientists emphasize that people who shed pounds through dieting generally experience a slower creep back—perhaps 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
Explaining the Rapid Regain
Doctors believe the mode of action of the injections is key to understanding the heightened regain.
These medications copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls feelings of fullness.
"Long-term administration of the hormone levels several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and could lessen responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Withdrawal of this medication results in hunger is no longer kept in check, making overeating much more probable."
A Lifelong Condition?
Health authorities advise the jabs for people with obesity-related health risks, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians argue that, due to the significant potential of relapse, the therapy is often ongoing.
This perspective is echoed by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "highlight the persistent character of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
User Accounts
Users who have come off the medication describe a powerful resurgence of appetite.
"It was like a trigger that goes on and I was suddenly extremely hungry," described an individual.
This difficulty is compounded if users have not developed sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.
Growing Adoption
Survey data show that a significant number of people in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with interest continuing to grow.
- Use is higher among females compared to men.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
- A large proportion access the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Finally, clinicians caution that while these medications are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a magic solution and maintained weight loss relies on combined behavioural management.
