No fewer than thirteen people killed and 98 injured in train derailment in the nation of Mexico.

A deadly train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the pace and handling of the country's key public works projects.

The disaster occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a route developed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.

“We will rigorously clarify the reasons behind this accident,” stated the country's president.

The president confirmed that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The president noted plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.

Key Undertaking of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the former leader, whose term concluded the previous year. This venture was a hallmark of his government's economic agenda for the southeastern region.

Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economic fortunes of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Project Execution and Safety Concerns

The building of both rail lines was supervised by the army, marking a significant expansion of its duties in public works. They were built at an rapid pace, beating predictions to be partially inaugurated before the end of that administration.

However, this rushed timetable had also fueled ongoing apprehensions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's crash was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This encompasses an previous collision this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-fatal derailments.

Calls for Audit and Pause

In the aftermath of the tragedy, the leader of a key rival party urged an immediate suspension in the building and running of all comparable projects.

This stoppage was requested until the completion of a thorough technical review. The party stated that the tragedy "demands prompt explanations."

In reply, the president asserted that the train had been running in complete adherence to all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would be "responsible" in both the construction and management of these strategic undertakings.
