A pioneering space traveler has opened up regarding her struggle with mental health after facing a relentless barrage of criticism in the aftermath of a landmark journey to the edge of space.
The 34-year-old activist – recognized as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the short-duration mission in April, which also carried celebrity crewmates.
The mission was met with derision by some, who questioned its cost and environmental footprint.
Reflecting on the ordeal, Ms. Nguyen, who made history as the pioneer for her community, stated the negative reaction eclipsed her moment under an torrent of sexist abuse.
“I told her my depression might last for years,” she recounted in a social media post, recalling a check-in call from a fellow crew member in the days following the landing.
She characterized the press attention and digital reaction as an unprecedented psychological assault.
“For a full week, I was bedridden and couldn't leave my Texas location,” she wrote. “Weeks after, I was forced to terminate a call, my voice choked by tears.”
The researcher, who has conducted studies in women's health research and operated research during the mission, said everything she had worked for – including her scientific research and astronaut training to the symbolic importance of her heritage – was drowned out under the deluge of misogyny.
She is best known for her pioneering work championing the cause of victims of sexual violence.
Her own aspiration for spaceflight was put on hold after surviving a rape during her college days, leading to a years-long quest for justice.
Now, eight months after reaching space, she has stated the “fog of grief has started to lift”, and she acknowledged the followers whose kindness were her lifeline. “Your support rescued me,” she affirmed.
She noted that even with the backlash, considerable good had emerged from the mission, including spotlight on her women's health research and new advocacy opportunities.
The fully automated New Shepard rocket launched from its launch site in April, carrying the six-woman crew on a short trip that crossed the edge of outer space.
The team of pioneers also comprised leaders in different industries.
